Park County Faces Crisis as Fentanyl Incidents Surge, Claiming Lives and Prompting Urgent Response

Park County, CO – June 24, 2024

The Park County Sheriff’s Office has issued an urgent appeal to the community following a series of harrowing fentanyl-related incidents that have rocked the county. In a heartbreaking incident on May 27, 2024, an infant succumbed to a fentanyl overdose in Bailey, resulting in the arrest of Lance Avey on charges of child abuse resulting in death. This tragic event underscores a growing crisis in the region, where fentanyl’s deadly grip continues to tighten.

In a similarly alarming case six months earlier, another infant was saved from a potentially fatal overdose by the timely administration of Narcan, a life-saving opioid reversal drug. This incident led to the arrests of John Knust and Jamie Petkas, who faced charges related to unlawful possession and distribution of a controlled substance.

The Sheriff’s Office has highlighted the critical need for community vigilance and support in addressing the rampant spread of fentanyl. The synthetic opioid, which is up to 100 times more potent than morphine, poses an extreme risk of overdose and death, even in minuscule amounts. The recent incidents involving infants have particularly shocked the community, emphasizing the pervasive and insidious nature of this drug crisis.

Residents are encouraged to utilize available resources to support those struggling with addiction. The American Addiction Hotline (888-505-9275) offers 24/7 assistance, while the website fentanyledcolorado.org provides valuable information on prevention, treatment, and support services.

As Park County grapples with this urgent public health issue, the Sheriff’s Office remains committed to safeguarding the community and preventing further loss of life. The recent tragedies serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl and the critical need for collective action.
